Helping your clients become more energy efficient

EPCs: Helping your clients become more conscious of their energy use

According to Rightmove’s Greener Homes Report, at least 18 million homes in the UK need improvements to reach an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of C.

Royal London Equity Release have partnered with Vibrant to offer your clients an EPC free of charge if they complete a case with either our Standard or Premier product.

What is an EPC?

An EPC is a report that includes a list of recommended changes that your clients could make to improve their home’s energy efficiency.

If your clients choose to make changes, they could:

  • Increase their property value.
  • Reduce their carbon footprint.
  • Decrease maintenance costs.
  • Lower their monthly bills.

How might your clients improve their energy efficiency?

Insulating the home

Insulating the walls, floors or roof could be the first step to making a home more energy efficient.

There are many types of insulation that could impact the efficiency of a home. There is a wealth of information about this online, such as this article from Ideal Home, which offers more detail about the different types of insulation you could have installed.

What could this cost?

It’s estimated that homeowners would need on average between £1,400 and £12,500 to insulate their house in 2024. It’s important to note that exact numbers will depend on individual cases.

Installing solar panels

Whilst prices vary, installing solar panels could be a viable option for your clients. Not only would they be contributing to the move towards sustainable sources of energy, but they could also save some money in the long-term.

Your clients may be put off by the initial costs, but using solar energy could eventually reduce their yearly bills and, ultimately, they may break even on their investment and make a profit (you can read more about this from Energy Guide.)

Making small changes

Making smaller changes to a home can increase its energy efficiency. This could include double glazing windows, switching to an energy efficient boiler, insulating pipes, or draught proofing. Even simply moving to LED lightbulbs could save you almost £175 a year!

Tracking energy usage

Your customers could employ ‘smart home’ resources, like a digital thermostat, which would enable them to control their heating systems from a phone and regulate how much they are spending. This option might not be accessible to some clients, but for others it could be a significant tool to reduce output.

This is a relatively cheap option for energy efficiency, costing between £150 and £300 for both the thermostat and the installation.
