Meet our Marketing Team: Megan Williams

Meet our Marketing Team: Megan Williams
This week we spoke to our Marketing Specialist Megan Williams to celebrate her on her recent win as Best Newcomer and discuss her views on the equity release industry.
Congratulations on your award! How do you feel?
Thanks! I feel really proud, to be honest, as I was up against some really talented professionals from different functions across the industry. It feels like not only a great personal win, but great recognition for marketers too. We’re usually a behind the scenes team, so it felt really special to be awarded Best Newcomer.
Tell us a bit about yourself…
I live in Plymouth with my partner and my rescued cats and dogs, which makes for a bit of a houseful! I’ve been working at Royal London Equity Release for almost three years now and it’s been rewarding to support our growth from a single-tie lender into a household name. I really love where I live and work- I’ve lived in a few different spots around the world, including Montana and Shanghai, but I love living between the moors and the sea where there’s always somewhere new to walk or a country pub to explore.
What do you love most about being a Marketing Specialist at Royal London Equity Release?
It was a steep learning curve initially, as I hadn’t had a full-time job in marketing when I started at Royal London Equity Release (or a job in financial services, for that matter!). Now I feel a lot more confident, I love seeing projects through to successful completion and working with others to deliver a shared goal. I am fortunate to work with a great team, who focus on building a culture of support. Knowing that we’re working together to improve the lives of customers across the country, from all different walks of life, is a great feeling.
What was the biggest challenge you faced in the last year, and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge in 2024 was probably rebranding Responsible Lending to Royal London Equity Release. It was a huge opportunity for the company to fully align our products and brand name under one purple roof, and all eyes were on my small marketing team to deliver an exceptional outcome in a short timeframe. We kept on track with the project, overcame last-minute amendments and when our brand was released to the market, it was really well received. I think communication was the most important factor for overcoming any issues that arose. I had regular meetings with our design team and kept open lines of communication to ensure that everything came together on time.
What have you learned in your role that other B2B marketers may find valuable?
I think it’s important to remember that, at the end of the day, you are still communicating with human beings. Often B2B marketing can be so product focused and technical, which doesn’t mirror the personal support that our support teams offer and just isn’t that exciting, either. I have loved finding a chattier brand voice and combining it with interesting visuals and some playful messaging (where appropriate). It is possible to deliver marketing that informs while also building relationships with business professionals.
What’s one thing advisers might not know about the work that goes on behind the scenes?
If I didn’t work in marketing, I think I would underestimate the amount of work that goes into the role - there’s definitely more to marketing than sending emails and doing the odd post on LinkedIn! We are constantly taking feedback onboard, thinking about how we can make things easier for advisers, and working with teams across the business to truly deliver value. Everything you see that has our name on it should come through marketing: whether it’s a presentation by our BD Team, a press release, an underwriting guide or a water bottle, we’ve definitely thought hard about how it will support your business!
What’s your best piece of advice for advisers new to equity release?
I would recommend that advisers take full advantage of the service provided by lenders and focus on building relationships with Business Development Managers and Adviser Support staff. If you keep up those connections, you’ll have an expert to chat with about a tricky case. They may even share product and business updates directly and provide support materials that you can share with your clients. We have four brilliant Business Development Managers around the UK, and a team of office-based support staff who will do whatever they can to help you and your clients. They can also provide you with some of our new marketing materials: we’ve got a customer guide, posters and presentations, all designed to support your business growth.
What can advisers look forward to from us in 2025?
2025 is going to be a big year for Royal London Equity Release. We’ve started strong with product enhancements for Principal and the launch of our customisable marketing materials, and there are some big projects in the works that are going to improve the adviser experience even further. In particular, we’re really focusing on product and tech developments… I can’t say too much, but you’ll definitely want to watch this space in 2025!
Thank you, Megan!
